Step 1
Live in an area in which it is legal for marijuana to be written as a prescription drug. Medicinal marijuana is legal in the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, the Netherlands, Spain and in some parts of the United States. Check with your state pharmaceutical board to determine if you live in a state in which physicians can legally write prescriptions for medicinal marijuana.
-
Step 2
Have one of the conditions that can be treated with medicinal marijuana. The drugs that include medicinal marijuana are typically used to treat nausea of cancer and AIDS patients when those patients have not responded well to other drugs.
-
Step 3
Ask your doctor to give you or prescribe to you medicinal marijuana. In some areas, those who are prescribed medicinal marijuana must get a government-issued card that allows them to obtain such medicine. In California, individuals can apply for a government-issued card for medicinal marijuana. However, not all counties participate in that program.
-
Step 4
Get Nabilone or Marinol. These are the two drugs that have been approved by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration that contain medicinal marijuana. These drugs are not smoked, however. They are synthetic drugs.
-
Step 5
Refill your prescription as dictated by your physician. This drug can only be used in the United States with the permission of a doctor.
