Your computer contains a lot of documents, pictures, email messages, and other personal information that should be protected and kept away from prying eyes. Password protecting your Mac will help to give you control of who is using your computer and for what. Here is how you do it.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Mac OS 10.2 and above

Step1
From the Apple menu, select System Preferences.
Step2
Mac Preferences - Security Then click on the Security tab.
Step3
Disable the login Check the Disable automatic login check box.
Step4
Choose your MAC account Go back to the main System Preferences window and click on the accounts icon.
Step5
Mac Login Options Click on the Login Options part of the accounts. Make sure the "Automatically log in as" check box is unchecked. Under Display login window as, select either List of users or the Name and password. The List of users option will provide a list of users when you first start up your Mac. Click on your user name and type your password to login.

The Name and password option is there for extra security which will require you to type in both your user name and password. I recommend that you do this.
Step6
Mac password screen Close the System Preferences box and restart your mac. When it boots up, you will be required to enter your user name and password. Now relax with the knowledge that your computer is safe, and DO NOT FORGET YOUR PASSWORD!
