Homemaking is a career and homemakers are professionals. A homemaker is a person whose prime occupation is to care for his/her family and/or home (Wikipedia.org), and who manages a household as a main daily activity (Free Online Dictionary). Career Professional Homemakers come from all walks of life. They have willingly and happily left the business world to care for home and family, or have worked as a homemaker their entire adult lives. Choosing to become a homemaker is a career decision, and having this type of career is just as valid as any other career choice. Just like the average business entity, every household is unique, and the duties of each homemaker are flexible and diverse. Consider these strategies to help you perform the 4 key responsibilities of a Career Professional Homemaker.

    Responsibility #1: HUMAN RESOURCES MANAGEMENT

    A family's human resources are its people. Managing human resources involves the productive and satisfying use of these people to accomplish the family's dreams and goals.

    a) Create a happy and healthy home environment that helps children and other family members to grow.

    b) Develop a balanced growth plan for each family member that focuses on the spiritual, mental, emotional and physical aspects.

    c) Provide a variety of family activities for recreation, team building and to reduce stress.

    Responsibility #2: FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT

    Career Professional Homemakers maintain the household budget, pay bills, handle banking responsibilities, and other financial matters.

    a) Calculate your family’s net worth, (assets minus liabilities).

    b) Plan for bills and savings by developing and maintaining a monthly budget for family expenses.

    c) Research cost effective options for buying food and other household items.

    Responsibility #3: PLANNING & ORGANIZING

    Career Professional Homemakers effectively plan what's to be achieved in the home. They anticipate important or critical events, identify resource requirements and assign responsibility for specific work, including deadlines and performance expectations.

    a) Develop a vision and mission statement for your family.

    b) Create a one-page plan with the strategies and objectives to achieve the vision and mission.

    c) Assign each family member age-appropriate tasks to perform that relate to the plan.

    Responsibility #4: OPERATIONS MANAGEMENT

    Career Professional Homemakers direct or coordinate the operations of a home. They keep it clean and running smoothly.

    a) Periodically inspect the home and any facilities. Perform routine maintenance by scheduling and completing daily, weekly and monthly cleaning responsibilities.

    b) Clean and repair clothing as needed.

    c) Plan, prepare and serve nutritious meals for the household.
