According to the federal government you can vote via absentee ballot if you are part of the armed forces, are working the day of the election and can not get to the booth, physically disabled, on vacation, 65 or older, admitted to the hospital as an emergency, have a death in the family, confined to jail, you attend to sick or physically disabled people, or are a certified poll watcher. Here are the steps you need to follow in order to vote via absentee ballot.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

YOU MUST ALREADY BE REGISTERED TO VOTE IN ORDER TO VOTE VIA ABSENTEE BALLOT.

With that said, visit http://www.vote411.org/ and select the state in which you are already registered to vote.

  2. Step 2

Half way down the page (after it loads with your state information) look for "Absentee Ballot Process". In the first paragraph it will give you a link to the absentee ballot application. Click that link.

  3. Step 3

The link loads a PDF document. You must have Adobe Reader installed in order to view PDF documents. Should your PDF document not load, you can contact your state office (information is listed on the page you loaded in step 2). They can email, fax, or mail it to you. However you must mail in the original application. You can not send back a fax, email, scanned document etc. because they need an originial signature.

  4. Step 4

Once you receive the application fill it out completely and mail it back to the address they have provided.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you do not sign the ballot it will be rejected
  • In most states you have up to 7 days prior to the election to mail it in. Check you state for more information.
