Step 1
Here’s some tips from the experts: When shopping, don’t put something back on the rack unless you’re absolutely sure you don’t want it. Often designer items are one of a kind so if someone picks it up, it’s gone for good.
Before buying ask yourself: Do I have anything to wear this with? Do I have anywhere to wear this to?
Designer items tend to run smaller so you may need to go up a size or two. -
Step 2
Shop at consignment stores in affluent areas. Always check for stains and tears before making a purchase.
-
Step 3
Shop online. Try eFashionHouse.com, DesignersLA.com, or shopbop.com’s sale section. Be sure to check out the link below for how you can “Dress Like a ‘City’ Star.”
-
Step 4
Shop the clearance racks and find out your favorite store’s sale schedule. Make friends with the sales clerks to get the inside scoop on when things will be marked down. Get on their mailing lists to receive coupons and notices of sales.
-
Step 5
Try to avoid clothing items that are just this minute’s fads. Even if you find an $800 skirt on sale for 75% off, it’s not that great of a deal if you only get a few months’ wear out of it.
-
Step 6
Buy out of season, February and August are good times. This can be quite a hassle. If you live in Phoenix who wants to buy a sweater in July? But this can be the best time to save big bucks on designer clothes.
-
Step 7
Shop at outlet stores. Do a little research online to check for deals before making a long drive.
-
Step 8
Shop on ebay and Craigslist.
-
Step 9
Ask for gift certificates to your favorite stores for Christmas and your birthday.
