Small steps can help you save big.
Small steps can help you save big.

Follow these suggested steps to save money during this tough economic downturn.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • An open mind
  • A litle discipline
  • A long-term perspective
  1. Step 1

Use cash. Withdraw from the bank only the amount of money you budget for the week and spend only that amount. It's much easier to recognize where your money is going when you are tangibly handing it over, rather than making electronic transactions that can surprise you later.

  2. Step 2

Sleep on it. Don't make impulse purchases. Put items you desire on hold and consider the purchases for at least 24 hours. If they still seem reasonable and within your budget, at least you know you have made thoughtful decisions. It's likely that you will forego several of these items in favor of spending your hard-earned cash more thriftily.

  3. Step 3

Keep a ledger. Write down all of your expenses. Just like a food diary, a purchase diary helps you keep track of your daily, weekly and monthly expenditures. You will likely begin to notice areas where you can begin to trim your spending.

  4. Step 4

Use public transportation. It may seem intimidating, but give the bus, train or subway a shot. It will save you boatloads of money and will also afford you the opportunity to read, write or meet new people along the way.

  5. Step 5

Buy generic products. Most generic products are offered in three quality tiers, and are priced accordingly. There is no need to pay a premium for the brand, particularly when you are trying to save money.
