Celebrate Build a Scarecrow Day (1st Sunday in July)

Scarecrows are excellent for keeping birds out of your garden. That's why they are called "scare crows".

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Items for building a scarecrow (see resources below)
  • Garden
  • Birds
  1. Step 1

You may think National Build A Scarecrow day should fall in the fall months but since most gardens are growing in the summer months it only makes since that the scarecrow already be built before there is a garden.

Start by reading about how to make a scarecrow and add your own special touches. You can find a great article about building scarecrows below in the resources section.

  2. Step 2

Once you have decided on what your scarecrow should look like gather all the materials you will need.

  3. Step 3

Enlist the help of your children, spouse, and kids in the neighborhood. If you live in a farming community or have a lot of friends who have gardens you can have a Build A Scarecrow Party. Invite everyone to bring 1-2 items. Be sure they know how many people will be at the party so they can make sure there bring enough supplies for everyone. Someone who agrees to bring the more expensive items should only have to bring that 1 item. Likewise, someone who brings the cheaper items could bring 2-3 different items. Have everyone bring a snack or drinks. Have trash bags available at each table so everyone can help cleanup.

Tips & Warnings
  • You can add a contest element to your party. Have a prize or several prizes for best scarecrow, scariest scarecrow, etc.
