How to Make a Decorative Folding Screen Panel
A decorative folding screen allows you to divide a larger room into two smaller spaces. It also allows you to set aside an area for privacy. For example, you might set the decorative folding screen in the corner of a bedroom to use as a changing area. The screen room divider can be a simple one that you put together in a few hours. You might opt to dress it up with fabric, or use solid wood panels. Once you understand the construction basics, there's no limit to the ways you can create a decorative folding screen. 1
Cut three panels of 1/4-inch plywood to the dimensions that you want for each section, using a circular saw. If you prefer, ask the lumber yard to cut the plywood for you.
-
2
Sand the cut edges of the plywood with medium-grit sandpaper to remove any rough edges.

3
Select a simple floral or geometric design. Make a pattern of the design. Trace the design on all three panels, using tracing paper. For variety, place the pattern in different locations on each of the panels. Keep in mind where the openings are if the panels are going to be privacy screens.
-
4
Drill a 3/8-inch starter hole inside the area you plan to cut out for the pattern. Insert the jigsaw's blade into this opening. Cut along the lines you drew. Repeat this process for each of the openings on each panel of the screen room divider.
-
5
Sand away any rough edges on the cutouts, using medium-grit sandpaper.
-
6
Paint primer on the front and sides of each of the panels. Apply primer to the cut-outs as well. Allow the primer to dry. Turn the panels over and apply primer to the back. Let the backs dry also.
-
7
Apply a coat of paint to the front and sides of the panels. If you prefer, paint the cut edges a contrasting color. Allow the paint to dry. Turn the panels over and paint the backs. Let the paint there dry. Apply a second coat of paint to all surfaces and allow it to dry completely.
-
8
Fasten two panels together by attaching three non-mortise type hinges to them, using the screws furnished with the hinges and a screwdriver. Turn the panels you just joined over and attach the remaining panel with three hinges attached in a similar manner.

Tips & Warnings
Plywood is available in different grades. Select panels without knots or other noticeable flaws. For a nicer finish, look for panels with a hardwood veneer layer. Stain those panels rather than painting them to enjoy the natural color of the wood.
If you prefer, omit the decorative designs cut into the panels. Cover the panels with fabric of your choice. Use a staple gun to secure the fabric.
