Things You'll Need:

  • Non-perishable food items
  • General Survival Items
  • First Aid Kit
  1. Step 1

    Collect Non Perishable Food Items
    - Paper plates
    - Plastic silverware
    - Plastic cups
    - Prepackaged snacks
    - Bottled water(1-3 gallons per person per day)
    - Powdered or evaporated milk
    - Powdered drink mixes and soda
    - Canned meats, fish, fruits, vegetables and soups
    - Instant coffee, tea and cocoa

  2. Step 2

    Collect General Survival Items
    - Several changes of clothes for all family members
    - Flashlights
    - Battery operated radio
    - Extra batteries
    - Manual can opener
    - Small grill or camp stove
    - Fire extinguisher
    - Extra prescriptions
    - Garbage bags
    - Insect repellent
    - Blankets
    - Diapers and baby wipes
    - Toys and games for kids
    - Charged cell phone batteries
    - Hurricane lamps and candles
    - Waterproof matches
    - Address book and important phone numbers
    - Important documents in waterproof bag
    - Cash
    - Tool set
    - Toiletries
    - Bleach for cleaning and to purify water (8 drops per 1 gal)
    - Duct tape
    - Rope or twine
    - Pet supplies

  3. Step 3

    Collect First Aid Items
    - Latex gloves
    - Sterile bandages
    - Sterile gauze and pads
    - Scissors
    - Tweezers
    - Antibacterial spray
    - Hydrogen peroxide
    - Pain Killers
    - Medical tape
    - Snake bite kit
    - Tourniquet
    - Burn treatment items

  4. Step 4

    Collect your supplies in one central area, and educate your family on the location of the hurricane kit.

  5. Step 5

    Create a family hurricane plan including when to evacuate, evacuation routes and locations, important contacts, somewhere to meet if separated, etc...

  6. Step 6

    Talk about the dangers of hurricanes, and what to expect during storms.
