Instructions

    • 1

Subscribe to free-stuff newsletters. These will deliver free, discounted and pay-postage-only offers to you.

    • 2

Pick up a copy of "Free Stuff for Crafting, Sewing and More." The book tells you how and where to get free craft supplies and includes rebates and coupons.

    • 3

Visit the MyFree.com Web site for everything from books to patterns to paintbrushes.

    • 4

Keep in mind that you may sometimes be asked to pay for postage, though it should be only a buck or two.

    • 5

Get together with other crafters and buy supplies in quantity. Request free samples when you place your order.

    • 6

Talk to the art teachers at your local schools. Many throw out supplies that will be replaced during the summer. Paints are a particularly good steal.

    • 7

Ask for remnants and rejects at your local craft store. Sometimes you can get a bag of leftover materials just for asking.

Tips & Warnings

  • Go to garage sales when sellers are closing up. They're often willing to give you unsold crafts items for nothing or for a minimal price.

  • Cal-Max (California Materials Exchange) has listings of materials offered free or at low cost. See ciwmb.ca.gov/calmax.

Check out your local recycling depot. Some have areas where people can drop off books and magazines. It is a gold mine for collage, card or scrap booking.

Go to thrift shops - you can always find jewelry that can easily be taken apart and used for something you create. Plus they're totally inexpensive. Also, ask around - your friends and relatives may have jewelry that they won't mind parting with.
