Start by building your log home up not out. A two or three story log cabin home heats more efficiently.

Use energy efficient windows. This will keep your log home warm in the winter, Cooler in the summer and in turn conserves energy.

Buy land that cannot be used for agriculture such as hillsides.

Recycle old barn wood and use them for beams, baseboards, and wide plank floors.
Step5
Use natural wool insulation between the logs and Roxul mineral wool batts, for the attic and frame walls on your log home.
Step6
Use tung oil with citrus oil on the interior logs and Penefin (Made from rosewood nuts) on the exterior.
Step7
Use European-style dual flush toilets, energy efficient shower heads, Energy saving water heaters also install a bathroom window in the shower to limit use of the bathroom fan.
Step8
Use High-velocity electric back-up heater system with return air fan.
Step9
Use indigenous plants to landscape hillside lots rather than a water-wasting lawn.

Eco-friendly log homes may cost more at first but in the long run you will save the environment as well as save money.

Good article! I do plan on building a log home in about 5 years. I'm still looking for the perfect piece of land in the Sierras. I'm also looking at composting toilets which make a great addition to an eco-friendly log home.
