Create your blog. You can either create a blog on a free website such as Blogger.com, Wordpress.com, or Blog.com among others, or you can create a blog on your own domain and host it. The advantage to having a blog on your own domain is that it looks more professional, while the advantage to having a blog on a free site is that it does not cost you any money.

Pick a topic to blog about that is relevant to a lot of readers. If you pick a topic that is not going to attract a lot of readers, you usually will not get paid much to blog. Topics such as money management, entertainment, how to do something, making extra money, time management and self help tend to do well in terms of readership. It is important to also pick a topic that you know well as the blog should offer good information to readers. A blog with good information will always attract more readers long term than a blog with inaccurate information.

Write regularly. Readers are more likely to visit your blog often if they know you will be updating it often. It is recommended that you write at least a few blog postings per week. However, unless your blog focuses on breaking news stories, it is also important to not update too often. Updating more than once per day is generally not recommended as it may annoy readers more than help them.

Sign up for an advertising service on your blog such as Google Adsense, Ad Brite, Chitika or BidVertiser. You can place these ads on your blog and get paid for every click from your readers. The average pay per click depends on the subject of your blog and may be anywhere between less than 10 cents and more than $2.

Sign up for an affiliate marketing service on your blog such as Clickbank, Amazon Affiliates, Azoogle, eBay or Commission Junction, among others. Bloggers can make money with these services by advertising a product on their blog. Whenever the product is purchased, the blogger receives a share of the profits from the sale. Bloggers who sell products on their blog may be able to make anywhere between $10 and $100 per sale.

Sell advertising to local and other businesses. By offering a permanent banner or similar ad on your blog, you can get paid a fixed monthly rate from the local or other business because your readers will see the advertisement and may be inclined to do business with them as a result. Depending on the number of readers on your blog, you may be able to make several hundred dollars per month by doing this form of advertising.

Write a paid post for your blog discussing a specific product. Many manufacturers are willing to pay bloggers a fixed fee to give their product a positive review or recommendation. You can write manufacturers that have products related to your blog and let them know that you are willing to give their product a recommendation on your blog for a fee.
