Kids love to make beautiful butterfly crafts. As a follow-up to a life cycle science lesson or a literature unit, this easy springtime butterfly craft is fun to make and decorate.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Coffee Filters
  • Markers
  • Spray Bottle of Water
  • Paper Towel
  • Pipe Cleaners
  • Scissors
  • Multi-Colored Pony Beads
  • One Slightly Larger Bead
  1. Step 1

Use water-based markers to color a paper coffee filter. Make bright, multi-colored decorations all over these soon-to-be butterfly wings.

  2. Step 2

Lightly mist the coffee filter with water from the spray bottle. The colors will run, so set it on a paper towel and blot it with another. Set it aside to dry.

  3. Step 3

Bend a pipe cleaner in two so that it forms a V. Place a rainbow of pony bead on each side of the V to form the front and back of the butterfly's body. Use 5-10 pony beads on each side.

  4. Step 4

When the coffee filter is dry, place it between the "V" of beads and twist the pipe cleaner closed at the top. Fan out the coffee filter to look like wings.

  5. Step 5

Place one slightly larger bead over both ends of pipe cleaner. Slide the bead down to rest on top of the vertical row of pony beads. Twist the two pipe cleaner ends together to secure the bead in place as the butterfly's head.

  6. Step 6

Snip the ends of the pipe cleaner so that they are a suitable length for antennas. Twist them into a little curl.

  7. Step 7

Hang your butterfly in front of the window as a sun catcher, or attach a magnet and place it on the fridge. Butterfly crafts make great gifts!
