Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Step1
Manage Your Efficiency
Most cars reach their peak fuel efficiency at around 60 mph. Set your cruise control to 60 mph on long highways and roads, which will help keep your speed at its peak efficiency. Also, using your overdrive setting can help improve your gas mileage.
Another way to maximize gas efficiency is to unload any excess cargo you might be carrying. If your trunk is full of stuff that is weighing down your car, you can save gas by unloading it and storing it somewhere else.
Step2
Plan Your Driving and Your Trips
If you can plan your trips wisely, you can save money on gas. Try to avoid driving during rush hour if you can; bumper to bumper traffic is terrible for your gas mileage.
Carpooling is a great way to cut down on gas usage. Find coworkers or friends who are heading to the same destination and plan accordingly.
Step3
Maintain Your Car
Keeping your car in great running condition may be the best way to improve gas mileage. Most large cities now require your automobile to pass emissions tests. If your car performed poorly in emissions, it may be worth it to have it checked out. The parts of your car that can give out and effect your gas mileage are the air filter, the oxygen sensor and the tire pressure.
