Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Things You’ll Need:
- An impending wedding date
- That's it!
Step1
Where to register:
These days it is more than ok to register at multiple stores. To help your guests easily find items from your wedding registries, try to pick national stores or those with website ordering to make things easier.
There are a lot of stores for great, traditional wedding registry items such as Macy's, Crate and Barrel, Linens and Things and more. Stores like Target and Walmart, etc., will offer you a mix of traditional items and fun options like TV's, camping gear, and more.
Step2
What to register for:
Starting your wedding registry with kitchenware and bedding is a great way to build a more sophisticated and cohesive home collection as if you are like most young people, you have a mixed set of stuff you originally took from your folks’ house, past roommates, and things you have picked up along the way. Register for what you’ll use. When it comes to dinnerware if you are not going to use butter dishes and saucers, why bother? Two sizes of plates, a great set of bowls, silverware, and a fun assortment of glassware are more than enough to get you started. Eight pieces of each for dinnerware, and eight to twelve of each size glass is typically enough for most couples. Have some fun too registering for extras like serving and appetizer trays, special pitchers and other special touches. Don’t feel the pressure to register for traditional items like china, gravy boats, and other items unless you will really use them. They take up space and wouldn’t it be more fun to get that BBQ anyway? With bedding and bathroom pieces, select a theme or pattern and register each item separately to allow guests to buy as many or as few pieces as they want. This works for dishes too!
Step3
How many items and how much should items cost?
Make sure to select gifts for different price ranges. It is a great way to make sure everyone on your guest list can find something they like and can afford. Larger items are sometimes a fun way for a group of guests to get together and chip in for something. Also, a collection of smaller items can make a great gift basket.
Don’t forget that create a registry large enough to accommodate your guest list. Two to three items per guest ensures that everyone has choices. Remember, they want to give you gifts! You likely aren’t going to get it all but by listing it in your wedding registry you are letting them know the things you are hoping for.
Step4
How to get the word out:
Make sure to tell your bridal party and family where you have registered so that they can get the word out. (Etiquette still says this info should be passed by word of mouth only. However, more and more couples are helpfully including this information on wedding website and save the date cards).
