Does your same old room leave you feeling bored?

You can change the look and feel of your room by adding a few simple items and spending very little money.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Plants
  • paint
  • fabric
  • throw rugs or peel and stick floor tiles
  • imagination
  1. Step 1
Removing everything from the room helps you to see it in a new way without all the clutter.

Removing everything from the room helps you to see it in a new way without all the clutter.

I always start by removing everything from the room. This allows you a clean slate with which to work. Patch any holes in the wall you will be painting. If your floor covering needs an overhaul consider colorful throw rugs or peel and stick floor tiles. I recently covered the bathroom floor in inexpensive tiles and it looks great!

  2. Step 2
Simple additions of plants make a big difference.

Simple additions of plants make a big difference.

Decide what feel you want the room to have. For instance when I recently redecorated the bathroom (which was boring white and very bland), I went for an earthy feel. To accomplish this I painted the walls a golden color and added brown tones to a shelf and the base cabinet. In order for it not to look too dark I painted the trim and drawers white which really freshened it up. I was trying to keep it fresh and airy looking so I added a lot of greenery. PLANTS always give the room a nice fresh look and they go with any color you choose. If you look at model homes you will notice that the decorators use lots and lots of plants. They tend to soften the look and are relatively inexpensive. If you don't have a green thumb use artificial plants. The fake plants now a days look real and obviously require nothing more than an occasional dusting.

  3. Step 3
Neutral wall colors give you the ability to add splashes of pattern and color throughout the room.

PAINT is another HUGE change that won't cost you an arm and a leg. Bring several sample cards home and decide the best color for the look you are going for in your room. Keep in mind that paint dries darker than the sample. I have found that its always best to stay a little neutral with your colors for walls, you can always add accent colors with fabric such as pillows and slip covers.

  4. Step 4
Covering an old chair with slipcovers gives it new life.

FABRIC is another way to change the look and feel of a room rather cheaply. Colorful throw pillows can spice up an old drab sofa and if you are handy with a sewing machine SLIPCOVERS make a HUGE difference. Target carries a nice selection of slip covers by Surefit if you opt not to make them yourself.

  5. Step 5

Moving items around occasionally will allow you to change the look for no money at all. That glass container vase that you've had sitting in the hall forever takes on a new life when placed on the dining table filled with live plants.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use lots of plants (real or artificial)
  • Look around your house for items to use in new and innovative ways.
  • Keep large areas neutral (floor, walls)
  • Don't forget to use fabric to add color and soften the look of the room.
