How to Get a Federal Tax Rebate Check

A federal tax rebate check is different from a tax refund that simply returns tax over-payments to taxpayers. In contrast, tax rebate checks are another name for the economic stimulus checks issued by the IRS after congressional approval in 2008. The Democrats are pushing for another round of economic stimulus payments for 2009. If they succeed, here's how to make sure you get yours.

Federal Tax Rebate Check

1. File your income tax return on time. In order to be in the first batch of recipients, you'll want to file your tax return on time and preferably electronically.

2. Sign up for direct deposit of your funds if you will receive a tax refund. This same account information will be used to deposit your federal tax rebate.

3. Earn a good income ... but not too much. Taxpayers who earn "too much" or "not enough" will qualify for smaller stimulus payments, or even none at all. Of course, you won't really want to earn less just so you can get a check, but it's good to know that the check amounts vary by income.

4. Include dependents on your tax return. Qualifying dependents are due payments as well, or will increase your check.
