Hosting a home poker tournament is a great way to spend an evening with your friends. With a little preparation, your friends will leave thinking they were just at the world series of poker

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Figure out how many guests you want to invite to your poker tournament. In general, you need at least 6 people for a decent game, up to 11 people can play at a single table, and if you have more than ~40 guests at your poker tournament you will be too busy hosting the tournament to play yourself. Invite your guests at least a week in advance.

  2. Step 2

Get your poker supplies. Decide how many poker chips you will need, here is a site which gives a good idea of chip count depending on your number of players http://www.easypokerchips.com/how-many-poker-chips A good rule of thumb is at least 30 chips per player. Count on having 2 decks of cards per table. Make sure you have enough seats for each player. Purchase some sort of kitchen timer to time each round of blinds

  3. Step 3

Decide your poker blind structures. Print out a copy of the blind structures and post it on the wall. Also, print out a copy of how much each chip color is worth and put it on the wall where it is visible

  4. Step 4

Count out the starting chips for each player and set them aside in a zip lock bag. This will make it easy to distribute the chips when the tournament starts

  5. Step 5

Get plenty of $1 and $5 bills from the bank to make change when people buy in.

  6. Step 6

Before your players arrive set out the food and drinks. Arrange the tables and chairs. Set out the cards

  7. Step 7

As each player arrives, take their buy in and hand them a bag of chips. Randomly assign them a seat using a prepared deck of cards. When all players have arrived, shuffle up and deal.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can change your blind structure to make your tournament go faster or last longer. Sometimes two quick tournaments in a night can be better than one long tournament
  • Set up a side game for the players who bust out to play in
  • Make sure you keep the buy in money in a safe place. Don't allow other people to handle the money or make change from it.
