Getting walnuts out of the tree is an easy job.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Very long pole.
  1. Step 1

When a walnut tree has enough nuts at the right time of the year to harvest the trees are usually very large. So you are NOT going to climb up in the tree to pick walnuts. There is a much easier way to bring them to you.

  2. Step 2

Use a long - About 8 feet- pole. Depending on the size of your tree the how high the branches are you can adjust for longer or shorter. On the end of the pole drape a folded towel and tie with a strong strap. This is to protect the tree limbs.

  3. Step 3

On your lowest limb with nuts place the towel end of the pole to the limb and shake. The will bring the nuts loose and to the ground. Advance to the next lowest limb around the tree. When the lower limbs are done, stop and gather the nuts.

  4. Step 4

Next shake the limbs on the next level up. You will want to go around the tree and gather all nuts for each level of limbs.

  5. Step 5

When you get to the top branches you may need to use a ladder to reach them. As you put the pole in place on the top limbs to shake the nuts loose be careful not to push yourself off the ladder. Wear goggles so you don't get hit in the eyes with dirt, bark and nuts!

  6. Step 6

Once gathered you will find a lot of the nuts still have an outer skin on the shell itself. Just peel away and let dry for a few days. After that you can begin to crack the walnuts and place the good meat in jars for later cooking.

Tips & Warnings
  • Wear eye goggles to protect yourself from being hit with a walnut from above!
  • This is most fun when done in a group.
  • Don't push yourself off the ladder or the ladder backwards when you are shaking the upper limbs.
