Authentic toasty-warm (vegan) tortilla chips... Yes, you can get tortilla chips not from a bag or a Mexican restaurant.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Corn Tortillas (10)
  • Fresh Squeezed Lime Juice (2 limes worth)
  • Kosher Salt (1 tbsp)
  • Vegetable Oil (2 cups)
  • {OPTIONAL SALSA}
  • {OPTIONAL SALSA} Salsa (1 jar)
  • {OPTIONAL SALSA} Serrano Peppers (7…if you’re adventurous like us)
  1. Step 1

    Cut tortillas into quarters.

  2. Step 2

    Mix lime juice and salt in a bowl.

  3. Step 3

    Dunk the tortilla slices into the lime mixture, and lay out to dry completely on a cooling rack for about one hour.

  4. Step 4

    Heat oil in a pot to 165°F-175°F.

  5. Step 5

    Place about four tortillas into the hot oil for 20-30 seconds, or unitl the edges start browning.

  6. Step 6

    Remove from pot and return to drying rack to cool, and enjoy!

  7. Step 7

    {OPTIONAL SALSA} Blend any store-bought salsa with ~7 serrano peppers for a very spicy salsa.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you don't have a thermometer to test the oil temperature, starting at a low heat, raise the heat incrementally until a little piece of tortilla fries correctly (on our oven it was about 5).
  • Feel free to dab with a paper towel if they seem oily when done.
  • Be very careful with hot oil... we know of some horror stories.
