Step 1
First, try to pack as much as you can in your check in luggage. Do you really need to carry mouth wash, shampoo, and conditioner in your carry on? If you're only taking a carry on, make sure your liquids are in one zip lock quart size bag and the containers are clearly 3 oz. or less. Or better yet, just buy the items when you arrive at your destination.
-
Step 2
Weigh your check-in luggage at home and stay under 50 pounds. This will save you time because you'll know you will be all set when they weigh them. Print off boarding passes if your airline allows you to. This saves time when you arrive at the airport. You can get your luggage checked in and move quickly to security.
-
Step 3
If it is winter and you're going south, leave your coat with whomever brought you. This saves on carrying a coat around. Wear slip on shoes and socks. This will save time when you go through security and have to take your shoes off.
-
Step 4
Don't wear a belt with a large buckle. I avoid belts. Keep the jewelry simple. Avoid change in your pockets, keys, and your cell phone. Put all of it in your carry on or pocketbook. You don't want to waste time emptying pockets. Speaking of pocketbooks, put your pocketbook in your carry-on, so you're only handling one bag. Make sure you removed your fingernail file and clippers!
-
Step 5
Your carry-on should have pockets on the outside where you can put your driver's license and boarding pass. My carry-on is small enough to put under the seat on the airplane, so when I sit down, I don't have to deal with the overhead.
-
Step 6
Carrying a laptop? Can you get along without it? If not, put it in a case that is easily accessible. The laptop must go in a separate bin.
-
Step 7
Did you bring gifts? Are they wrapped? Don't wrap gifts because they will be unwrapped.
-
Step 8
Did you purchase water before you arrived at security? Drink it now and get rid of it. No food or water are allowed when going through security. You can purchase water and snacks after security.
-
Step 9
Well, that's it. Dress comfortably and avoid heavy jackets. Wear shoes that slip off. Wear socks because you'll have to take your shoes off. Avoid stuff in your pockets. Avoid belts with metal and heavy jewelry. Keep everything in one carry-on that will easily go through the detector. Avoid bringing liquids.
-
Step 10
With license and boarding pass in hand, a simple carry-on, you can breeze through. When you are past security, sit down and have a drink. You made it! Now did you hear that announcement say the plane is 2 hours late?

on 7/9/2008 This is really great advice. It will save a lot of hassle. Don't forget not to get irritated at the staff. No matter how innane some things seem they are only doing their job. 5*
