How to get rid of maggots in outdoor garbage cans

There's nothing worse than removing the lid of a trash can and finding a volcano of maggots. During warm weather, a fly can easily sneak into the can unnoticed and begin an ugly cycle of pests. Even if you think you've sealed your trash bags, a fly can usually find its way in and get to the goodies.

People have used a variety of remedies to eradicate the maggots, which of course will grow into houseflies if left untended. Methods such as pouring a solution of bleach and water around the edges of the can and on the lid may work, although some maggots seem to be immune. Other methods include pouring boiling water onto the critters, or a solution of dog shampoo and water. Wasp killer spray may also work.

The best method is ongoing to get you through the summer. Despite your best efforts, one fly can find its way into the trash can and keep you busy.

    Tips & Warnings

    • Diatomaceous earth is a powder made of fossilized remains of diatoms and is used in animal feed to eliminate worms. The powder doesn't hurt large animals, but will slice and dice certain types of insects and larvae.

    • Diatomaceous earth can be found at any organic gardening store, and often in hardware stores that carry small lines of organic products.

    • Manufacturers recommend that you wear a mask when handling diatomaceous earth because breathing it can irritate your lungs.

    • Diatomaceous earth should be used with caution around the garden. While it does a fantastic job of killing bugs, it also kills many beneficial insects, including ladybugs.
