Step1
BOOKS!
Buy textbooks used! And even better, buy international editions of the books you need. You may not be able to resell international editions to your bookstore, but you'll end up spending less money in the end.
Another option is sharing textbooks with friends. Go to your first class for each course before purchasing your textbooks. Often, a professor will mention that a certain book won't be used much during a course, but is still essential. This is a great cue for you to find a friend to split the cost with. Some professors will even tell you that a certain book will not be used at all during the course, so always wait for your first round of classes before buying anything on your book list.
The absolute cheapest option (but not recommended if you want to make good grades) is to not buy your books at all and just use the ones the library has. Again, this is not recommended because its annoying to make so many trips to the library!
Step2
MEALS!
Avoid eating out at all costs. If you do go out to eat, select cheaper items and don't order drinks.
Use your meal plan, if you have one. If you don't have a meal plan, try to find a way to sneak into your cafeteria (not recommended, but effective).
Buy your own groceries and eat healthy. Eating healthy is better for you and your wallet! A lot of extra cost is factored into pre-made meals and frozen foods that you can avoid if you just buy the essentials.
Visit local churches. Churches around college areas often offer meals on certain days as an outreach. Take advantage!
Step3
DRINKING!
Everyone knows partying is just as essential to the college student as class is, so learn how to do it on the cheap.
There is a way to drink for free all 4-9 years you will be in college: attend fraternity rush events. However, this will backfire once you start getting recognized as not being a freshman.
Forgo the bars and go to house parties. Drinking at a bar is always going to be more expensive, so buy a 30 pack and find a shabby house to do your thing in. Added benefit: house parties don't close at 2 AM.
WAL-MART ALWAYS HAS THE CHEAPEST BEER!
Step4
OTHER COSTS
Use your student discount. Ask local businesses and vendors if they offer a student discount. Often, restaurants and movie theaters will offer some sort of discount.
Buy your electronics using your discount. Most computer retailers will offer ~10% discount on their products with a student ID.
