Unglue Yourself from the TV Screen
Unglue Yourself from the TV Screen

You promised yourself you would only watch TV for an hour, just an hour, and then get back to doing something important. But you can't pull yourself away from the endless stream of sitcoms, talk shows, and movies. Your hand seems glued to the remote. Soon you realize that you have been channel surfing for hours. It's time to have a plan to unglue yourself from the tube.

Difficulty: Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Don't have a TV set in your bedroom - The bedroom should be used for 3 things and 3 things only: Sleeping, Dressing, and Sex. Get rid of the TV. You just might get more of one or all of them if you do.

  2. Step 2

Invest in TiVo® - Or do it the old fashioned way and set your VCR to record your favorite shows.

  3. Step 3

Leave a message for yourself on your remote that says, "What are you missing out on because of me?"

  4. Step 4

Make a list of 3 or more things you can do instead of channel surf.
Example: 1. Read a book by your favorite author. 2. Walk the dog. 3. Call a friend.

  5. Step 5

Join a volunteer organization or sports league. Take up an interest that you might have been putting off because you didn't have "time" to do it.

  6. Step 6

Make the effort to turn the TV off and go outside. Don't let bad weather stop you. Even a 15 minute walk will revive you enough to help you brainstorm about what else you can do instead of watch TV.

Tips & Warnings
  • Don't use TV to distract yourself from depression or some other serious issue. The problem will still be there after the credits roll.

on 3/7/2009 Great advice. I'll miss the TV in the room. I may rid the TV from my room when the kids are grown or move out. Which ever comes first. LOL! 5*
