It is the start of summer break, and you have already heard the words, "I am bored". Here are some ideas to keep the kids busy thie summer without hurting your budget.
Movies: Check the local paper. Many theatres offer free shows during the week for kids under 12. For example, our local theatre offers free Wednesdays at 10 am. They also offer $1 soda and $1 popcorn at that time.
Step2
Zoo: Many zoos are free or have free admission days. You can pack a lunch, snack and drinks to save more money.
Step3
Museums: check the internet for the museums website. Museums often have free or family days. In Chicago, Science and industry is free for the summer for kids under 12 (up to 2) with 1 paid adult.
Step4
Beach: Many beaches are free. If there is a charge, see if there are any days that are free. Ask if they charge per person or car load. (if it is by car, see if another family wants to join you and split cost). If cost is different for residents, try to see if you know someone who is a resident that you can go with. Pack a cooler, towels, sunscreen and camera to avoid other costs.
Step5
Picnics and parks: free. Try new and different parks to keep it entertaining. Pack a picnic, bring balls, bubbles, etc to keep kids entertained.
Step6
Bike riding: Pack the car and hit the trails and forest preserves. Beautiful, healthy and free.
Step7
Plan play dates with different friends, varying the location. Will keep the kids entertained and offer different toys and activities.
Step8
Library: Free and educational. Many libraries offer summer reading programs. Kids join, read and earn prizes to help motivate them to keep reading in summer.
