Clematis is a beautiful climbing plant with attractive flowers. There are more than 294 species of clematis and they come in several colors. There are a couple of things you should know to collect the seeds from a clematis. Viable seeds are visible in the seedhead, so if you can't see them then they are not ready. Once you have identified the seedhead, here is how you collect the seeds.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • can for collecting seeds
Step1
Old Man's Beard Identify the seeds. You can tell when seeds are ready when the plant takes on the characteristic "Old man's beard" look. When the seeds are dark brown and dry, they are ready to be collected and can be stored safely.
Step2
Clematis seeds Once you have identified your dark brown seeds, collecting them is easy. Take your coffee can and place it under the seed head and gently pull the seeds away from the pod. Drop them in your can. If the seeds do not fall easily with a gentle pull, they are not ready to be collected.
Step3
Store you seeds in a ziplock baggie in a dark place outside during the winter or in the refrigerator.
