How to Sew a Bedskirt

Coordinating your bedskirt with your comforter doesn't have to mean driving all over town searching for an exact match or spending loads of money to buy the entire set. Sew your own bedskirt to coordinate with your bedroom décor and have fun picking out exactly what colors, patterns and fabrics you want to use.

Instructions

    • 1

Pick a color that looks nice as a background to your comforter. Even though patterns can be fun, solid colors look best as bedskirts. Take into consideration wall and carpet color too. Keep your eye out for coupons and fabric sales.

    • 2

Find an old fitted sheet that fits the box springs. If you don't have one on hand, a plain, inexpensive sheet works too. Fitted sheets help the bedskirt stay in place when you change the linens and don't become lopsided if the mattress shifts.

    • 3

Place the fitted sheet on the bed. Use a yardstick and chalk or a sewing pencil to mark around the three edges (the foot and two sides-a skirt is not needed along the back side of the bed since it is against the wall). Make sure the line is up far enough to hide the fitted sheet once the mattress is placed on top of the bedskirt.

    • 4

Measure from the top of the box spring (at the chalk line) to the floor to get the height of the skirt. Add the desired hem line amount. Measure the length of the chalk line to get the length. Cut your chosen fabric.

    • 5

Hem the skirt on your sewing machine with a ½-inch seam allowance. Simply fold over the hem allowance, pin and sew a straight seam.

    • 6

Pin the right sides together. Remove the fitted sheet from the box springs. Sew the panels onto the fitted sheet with your sewing machine.

Tips & Warnings

  • These directions will give you a flat skirt. Add pleats when you sew the skirt onto the sheet for a ruffled appearance.
