Formed in 1925, American Legion Baseball is a nationwide youth program. Many Major League players, including Dave Winfield, Reggie Jackson and Jim "Catfish" Hunter, had their start in the legion. New coaches and players can visit any American Legion outpost for registration forms, rules and team schedules. The Legion raises millions of dollars to support teams nationwide. American Legion players can even receive college scholarships.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Review the official rules including your state's variation. These variations deal with safety, insurance and equipment. National tournaments follow the official rules. Every team gets group liability and accident insurance from S.A. Van Dyk, Inc.

  2. Step 2

Register for a local American Legion Team. The Senior League is for players 19 years and under. Age cap for Junior League players is 17. Find registration forms either online at the ALB website or local American Legion Outpost. Only amateur players are allowed in the league.

  3. Step 3

Purchase only American Legion sanctioned equipment. Since rules vary for aluminum bats, it's better for players to buy wooden ones.

  4. Step 4

Attend team practices at its base schools. Home schooled children may also participate in the league. They can join the team closest to their parent or guardian's home.

  5. Step 5

Enjoy each game and adhere the Legion's code of conduct. Although most rules parallel those of Major League Baseball, there are some major exceptions. Artificial noisemakers are prohibited. After a second warning, fans using them have to leave the stands.
