The popularity of John Deere is unmistakable: Ever since the mass-produced model D tractor rolled off the line, John Deere has been an American icon. Buying an antique John Deere tractor can be a good investment, provided you do your homework and find out all you can about the tractor's history.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Realize that there is no organized pricing guide for antique John Deere tractors. The market varies widely in price for an antique John Deere, depending on how much people want it. Check current pricing at Ytmag (see Resources below).

  2. Step 2

Pore over the newspapers and find auction listings for antique John Deere tractors. Know what you're looking at. The Model A, for example. features a skinny radiator and fuel tank, and was a workhorse, doing the work of six horses in a day.

  3. Step 3

Look for antique two-cylinder John Deere tractors at county fairs. Talk to some of the owners, and find out if any are for sale. Ask their opinion on what you should look for in an antique John Deere tractor.

  4. Step 4

Attend auctions, but keep your hand down until you've thoroughly looked over the tractor that you desire. Bring along a knowledgeable friend to help you decide whether to take the plunge and say yes to an antique John Deere tractor.

  5. Step 5

Examine the John Deere completely and find out as much as you can about the machinery. Ask what parts are new and what parts are original. Ask for any paperwork or manuals that may have come with the tractor.

  6. Step 6

Order John Deere operating manuals and parts publications at the John Deere Services Publication Office by calling 1-800-522-7448. It helps if you know the tractor's serial number when you call.

  7. Step 7

Visit the John Deere Collections Center in Moline, IL. You can find out more about their collections at Johndeereheritage.com.
