Step 1
Look for a desk that is made of solid wood. A particle board or manufactured wood desk will not be sturdy and will sustain far more damage than a real wood desk. Metal desks and desks that use glass in the design go out of style far too often. If you buy a solid wood student desk, it will never go out of style, it won't need to be replaced and it will probably be passed down for another generation to use.

Step 2
Buy a desk that has its drawers on metal gliders. A desk that doesn't have this feature is simply not high end and will probably not hold up. Metal gliders keep the drawer opening and closing smoothly. They are more expensive than having the drawer simply rest inside the opening, but they are much more likely to resist wear and tear over the years.

Step 3
Think about the needs of the student in question. If the student has a lot of small electronics like an iPod and cell phone, consider one that lets students plug their electronics straight into the desk. There are models, like Pottery Barn's Smart Desk line, that have outlets in the top of the desk and recharging stations for cell phones and other items.
