How to Control Sod Webworms

Keeping a lawn or garden free of parasitic creatures is nearly impossible; controlling the population is not. Controlling a sod webworm infestation as soon as you notice it can limit the damage. There are methods you can use to limit sod webworms if you have enough patience and a little knowledge. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Concentrate on controlling the larval stage infestation rather that then adult stage. In the adult stage, sod webworms become flies and much more difficult to control. In the larval stage, it's much easier to implement the proper control methods with the least amount of effort and the best results.

    • 2

Keep the lawn and plants irrigated as much as possible. When the soil and lawn start to dry out, the sod webworm infestation will increase.

    • 3

Introduce the sod webworm's natural predators into the environment. The ground and rove beetles are such predators, and they will not damage the lawn or garden. You can also use steinernema nematodes to help control sod webworms.

    • 4

Plant grass varieties that are resistant to the sod webworm infestation. To identify these grasses, look for the phrase "Endophyte Enhanced." Ryegrasses and fescues are the most common forms.

    • 5

Use chemical treatments to effectively control a sod webworm infestation. Chloronicotinyl and diacylhydrazine are two chemical compounds that can help control sod webworms. When you apply these chemicals, make sure you do so during the larval stage of the sod webworm's development.
