It's a simple fact that in today's market you simply cannot compete unless you accept credit cards. Here is how to use a credit card terminal to correctly process transactions so your customer can be on their way with their purchase.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy
Step1
Install your credit card terminal and establish a connection. Do this through your merchant account and a communication line of some type, whether an Internet connection or phone line.
Step2
Swipe your customer's card. The card reader in the terminal will read the information from the card. Some readers you swipe in only one direction, while others swipe in either direction.
Step3
Type in the amount of the transaction. Be sure to check this number after you type it in to check for errors. You don't want to accidentally charge your customer too much or too little.
Step4
Give the pin pad or signature pad to your customer. They will verify the amount is correct and sign the signature pad or type in their PIN to approve the transaction.
Step5
Print the receipt and ask your customer to sign if they have not done so already. That signature assures a completed transaction.

Tips & Warnings

  • With many people opting for check cards instead of carrying cash, you need to use credit card terminals that serve these customers as well.
  • Expect your revenues to go up anywhere from 50 to 400 percent when you get the equipment necessary to take credit cards to best serve all of your customers.
