No single camera feature has more impact on the quality of a digital camera's pictures as resolution and no single feature has more impact on the price of a digital camera, either. Therefore, it's important to learn a little about resolution and decide how much your digital camera needs before you buy one.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Know what resolution in a digital camera does. Resolution in digital cameras is measured in megapixels. A pixel is a square dot that is used to make up an image and a megapixel is one million pixels. The resolution of a camera is how many megapixels its picture will contain.

  2. Step 2

Understand how resolution affects picture size. The more megapixels a camera has, the larger the picture can be made without blurring. A camera with low megapixels produces small pictures, which will be blurry if blown up. A camera with high megapixels produces large pictures, which can be blown up significantly with no blurring.

  3. Step 3

Purchase a two megapixel or less digital camera if all you'll use the pictures for is email or posting them on the Internet. Digital pictures used on screen do not require a high resolution because they do not have to be very big. A low resolution picture may even be desirable for these uses because the file size is small.

  4. Step 4

Upgrade to a four megapixel digital camera if you want to order small prints. A four megapixel digital camera produces images suitable for 4 x 6 or 5 x 7 prints.

  5. Step 5

Choose a six megapixel or higher digital camera if you want larger prints. A six megapixel camera produces pictures large enough for 8 x 10 or 11 x 14 prints.

  6. Step 6

Consider speed. The higher the resolution of a digital camera, the slower it processes images. This means the amount of time you'll have to wait in between taking pictures will be longer.

  7. Step 7

Buy only what you need. Digital cameras with higher resolutions are more expensive so choose a camera with a resolution high enough for your needs, but no higher. Cameras with higher resolutions also require larger memory cards, which increases your expenses.
