Have Healthy Cuticles

Cracked and unhealthy cuticles can make even the best manicured nails look bad. The cuticle on your nail acts as a barrier to keep bacteria out of your body; therefore it is important not to cut them. However, it is important to keep your cuticles well groomed. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Eat a healthy diet to improve the health of your cuticles. Eat foods high in vitamins A, B, C, D and E. Be sure to get plenty of calcium and zinc. Limit the amount of alcohol, saturated fats and sugar you consume.

    • 2

Apply hand cream or lotion several times a day and spend time massaging it into your nails and cuticles. If your cuticles are ragged or peeling, they are in need of moisturizing.

    • 3

Rub shea butter cream or vitamin E oil into your cuticles at bedtime. Both help to smooth out your cuticles and repair any cracks in them.

    • 4

Try herbal solutions for healthy cuticles. Grapeseed oil, lavender, neem oil, honey and beeswax all help to keep cuticles healthy. Massage them into the base of the cuticle or buy brush-on cuticle care products that contain these ingredients.

Apply a good cuticle remover and then push your cuticles back with a cuticle stick, also called an orange stick. Hold the stick at a 45-degree angle to your cuticle and push slowly and gently toward the base of your finger. Then move the stick in small circles near the base of your finger to remove any dry dead skin.

Tips & Warnings

  • Wear gloves outside in the wintertime to prevent your cuticles from drying out.

  • Avoid using metal nail files and other metal nail grooming tools as these can be harmful to the delicate skin surrounding your cuticles.
