How to Use a Floating Chlorinator

Floating chlorinators are a way to keep a steady flow of chemicals in your pool water. Although it may not be as effective as adding chemicals to the water through a pumping system, a floating chlorinator can be helpful in keeping the water at the correct pH. Floating chlorinators are fairly simple to use.

Instructions

1. Buy a floating chlorinator with your favorite design. In addition to basic, unobtrusive designs, there are other designs that may be a better choice if you want a more gaudy or flamboyant appearance in your pool area.

2. Open the lid of the floating chlorinator and add the desired amount of chemicals. The more you put in, the longer the chlorinator will do its task. You can fill many chlorinators with several 1- or 3-inch tablets.

3. Adjust the chlorinator to allow more or less chlorine into the pool, depending on the pH of your pool water. Most floating chlorinators have a feature for letting more or less water into and out of the chlorinator. If your pool pH is too low, for instance, you need to adjust the chlorinator (usually this means closing an adjustment ring).

4. Check your pool's pH periodically. Make adjustments to the chlorinator, as outlined in Step 3, to keep the pH within acceptable limits. The amount of chemicals that the chlorinator dispenses may vary slightly depending on conditions (such as the weather), so periodically checking the pH of the pool is important.

5. Refill the floating chlorinator when empty or nearly empty. The chlorinator can only do its job if it contains chemicals, so check it periodically to make sure it has a sufficient amount.
