How to Use Airline Lingo

Whether a person is applying for a job with an airline, currently works for one or just wants to be able to converse with an airline employee, it is important that he or she learn to use airline lingo. People in the airline industry use terms that only apply to airline-specific issues and if an individual does not know the lingo, it'll be nearly impossible to understand an airline-specific conversation.

      Learn the definitions and meaning of the airline industry-specific terms. You will hear and use these words almost exclusively in reference to airline conversations. For instance, if you say to someone, "I am trying to catch the red-eye," this means you are attempting to get on an airplane whose departure time is very late at night. Knowing the definitions of airline lingo is not enough: you have to understand their use in context.

      Practice the use of airline lingo on your friends and family. Most people have no idea what airline terms mean, so practice the terms on them before attempting a conversation with someone who can use airline lingo correctly.
