How to Use Advantage Flea Control

Fleas are a nuisance for any pet or pet owner. A number of products are available to help you beat fleas. People who use Advantage Flea Control give it rave reviews. The fluid easily absorbs into the skin, and its flea-killing power lasts for a month on most dogs and cats.

Instructions

    • 1

Ask your veterinarian to determine the dosage your cat or dog needs. Advantage Flea Control is packaged by weight class of pet.

    • 2

Subdue your dog or cat, and get him calm enough so you can handle him. You'll want him to face away from you, so either get a friend to help or hold him still while he is facing away from you.

    • 3

Take the dose of Advantage Flea Control in one hand and remove the cap. The cap, when you turn it around, has a nozzle that connects with the stopper to open the tube. Use the nozzle to open the tube. Keep the tube upright to avoid spilling.

    • 4

Use your hand to divide the fur on the back of your cat or dog's neck. You want to spread the fur far enough so you can see the skin.

    • 5

Apply a small amount of the medication to the skin in the cleared area.

    • 6

Move your free hand down a few inches, and repeat the process of spreading the fur down to the skin for application. Continue down to the middle of your cat or dog's back, in 1-inch intervals, applying a portion of the Advantage Flea Control to the skin.

    • 7

Reapply Advantage Flea Control every month. Dogs that go swimming a lot or are bathed frequently may need to have Advantage reapplied every other week.

Tips & Warnings

  • Give your dog or cat a bath at least 48 hours before applying Advantage Flea Control to make sure their skin has enough oils to help spread the medication and so you won't wash it off after you apply it.

  • Control your cat or dog with a leash or put them in a crate or carrier to make the application easier.

  • Use gloves when you apply Advantage Flea Control to ensure you don't get the medication all over your skin. It is nontoxic and safe for your pet, but, especially if you are pregnant, it is best to be safe.

What if my cat itches behind it's ears and licks it's paw? I think my cat did this today and I'm a little worried.

You should NOT apply Advantage down to the middle of a cats back, only dogs. On cats it is to be applied ONLY at the base of their neck between the shoulder blades, as cats are prone to trying to lick the stuff off, and you don't want your pet ingesting this stuff.
