How to Prevent Swimming Pool Scum

If you have a swimming pool, you want to keep it as clean as possible. One problem many pool owners face is a build-up of scum on the sides and bottom of the pool. Use the following methods to keep your swimming pool free of scum.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

1. Shock the pool regularly, at every start of the season and after a lot of people have used it. You can buy pool shock products online (see Resources below).
2. Clarify the pool weekly. Each week you should use a clarifying treatment, like Dissolve. Add about 3 ounces of the solution to treat 10,000 gallons. You can purchase Dissolve online (see Resources below).
3. Clean the surface areas of the pool before you start to notice a scum build-up. See Resources section for online purveyors of suitable products.
4. Throw a Scum Ball into your pool. The Scum Ball absorbs any oils and lotions that get into the pool. You can reuse the Scum Ball by placing it in the wash. Purchase the product online (see Resources below).

Tips & Warnings

• Scum usually comes from oils released from the skin of swimmers. Lotions and product grease also contribute to scum build-up.
