How to Troubleshoot an Ozonator

Using an ozonator in your spa or hot tub is a great way to keep the water clean without the use of harsh chemicals. This Earth-friendly option effectively kills bacteria and viruses, but is safe for skin and hair. Occasionally, ozonators don't operate how they should, but you can easily troubleshoot any problems.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Check your ozonator's power supply if the unit's light isn't glowing. If the power cord is plugged in and you still don't see any light, the breaker might have tripped. Make sure water hasn't flooded the ozonator. If the unit is dry and the power cord is plugged in, you likely need to replace it.

  2. Step 2

Adjust the ozonator's voltage if the light is flickering.

  3. Step 3

Clean your filter if the ozone jet isn't producing any bubbles. If cleaning the filter doesn't fix the problem, make sure all the jets are open, there's no debris clogging them and the tubing isn't pinched. If you're still not getting any suction from the tube connected to the ozonator, make sure the supply check valve is installed correctly.

  4. Step 4

Make sure the air control cap and the o-ring aren't leaking in the air control valve. This could be another culprit of the ozone jet not producing bubbles.

  5. Step 5

Run your ozonator through a 24-hour cycle if the water becomes cloudy. Ozonators need to run at least 6 hours a day to be effective. If the water is cloudy and the ozonator runs through full cycles, your water chemistry could be out of balance. The water's alkalinity should be between 80-150 PPM. The pH needs to be between 7.2 and 7.6 and calcium hardness between 100 and 250 PPM. You might need to replace your filter if the water remains cloudy.

Tips & Warnings
  • You should be able to find the ozonator's voltage at the power supply.
