How to Hire Auto Detail Shop Employees

When hiring employees for your car detailing business, it's important that you look for workers who have experience and the willingness to learn more. Prospective employees who think auto detailing is simply washing and waxing might not be a good fit for your business.

Instructions

    • 1

Interview each candidate and ask them about their previous experience. Find out whether their experience stems from a small, locally operated business or a dealership.

    • 2

Discuss what sorts of cleaners prospective employees are familiar with, along with which cleaners are better for auto detailing. Find out if possible hires have experience with hand waxing, detailing the interior and buffering the outside of cars.

    • 3

Look for employees that bring additional experiences to your business. These experiences include pin striping, applying touch-up paint, removing decals and removing old window tint. Hiring employees that have experience in these areas allows you to offer different detailing services.

    • 4

Hire less experienced workers who show a willingness to learn and grow with your company. Have them shadow a more experienced detailer for a couple weeks before they start detailing on their own. Hire some employees who are good candidates for learning your speciality services, such as pin striping and tint removal.

    • 5

Give each prospective employee a small test by having them detail a small section of a car. Provide all the tools and cleaners and see how they detail the car. This helps you weed out people who have no clue what they're doing from those that are detailing professionals.

    • 6

Keep all applications together, and write small notes on them to remind you of each applicants strengths and weaknesses. Tell each prospective hire when they should hear from you and decide who to hire after you've interviewed a handful of people.
