Step 1
Make sure you have enough slots. The first thing to do before you buy any type of RAM is to open up your computer and see how many available RAM slots you have. You may have to remove some RAM in order to add more if all of your slots are full. It's important to take this into consideration when you're buying cheap RAM.
-
Step 2
Prevent wasting RAM. One of the best ways to save money on RAM is not to waste any. If your computer has three RAM slots and each already has a stick of RAM in it, you'll have to remove one before you can add more. Therefore, it's best to buy one large stick of RAM now instead of a smaller one now and a smaller one later.
-
Step 3
Look for off brands. Off brand RAM usually provides the same performance as name brand RAM and it is usually cheap. The disadvantage of off brand RAM is it does tend to be less reliable and may not last as long. However, even if you have to rebuy later, it can still be cheaper in the long run.
-
Step 4
Ensure the RAM is compatible. With expensive, name brand RAM you're usually guaranteed it will be compatible with your system. This is not the case with cheap RAM, so you'll have to do your homework. Consult the book which came with your motherboard to visit your motherboard manufacturer's website to see what types of RAM your motherboard will accept.
-
Step 5
Wait for a good price. RAM prices fluctuate much more than other computer parts. While most computer parts come down gradually over time, RAM prices fluctuate up and down. Watch RAM prices and wait for a good time to buy.
