Including well lights in your outdoor lighting design is a quick easy project when, if designed properly, can add warmth and friendliness to your home. Well lights are a splendid way to accentuate an outdoor area, or add glow to the side of your home. Here is how to design an outdoor area with well lights so that your home can have that warm inviting glow.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Step1
Determine the type of well lights you want to use in your design. Well lights come in several different shapes and sizes. For the best design, be consistent in which shape you choose for your outdoor lighting project.
Step2
Select trees, monuments and other places of interest to light. You'll need extra wire to get to these places, so it's good to know where they are and how far away they are from the main wire.
Step3
Give a general glow to the sides of your house, pool, deck or patio by running well lights along the edge. Keep the line about one to two feet away from the edge of the subject that you want to light. If you install them any closer you will limit the well light's output.
Step4
Count how many well lights you need for your project. In general, you need to place one well light every three feet for the best illumination.
Step5
Measure how much wire you need to complete the project. Add 20 percent for waste.

Tips & Warnings

  • To get a feel for what the well lights will look like, take a small flashlight and stick it in the ground at the proposed lighting areas.
