Step 1
Consider a thin or low loft batting. A low loft batting is good for when you want a flatter appearance to your quilt. Low loft is also the right choice for quilted place mats, table runners and wall hangings.
-
Step 2
Select a high loft batting, which is thick, if you want a fluffier quilt. However, you should remember that high loft batting is difficult to machine quilt, and is best for hand-tied quilts.

Step 3
Choose cotton for a more traditional look. Cotton batting is thinner but heavier. Quilts with cotton will feel cooler in summer, but they are also able to keep you warm and toasty when it's cold out. A bonded cotton batting has an adhesive that holds the batting together and prevents it from shifting, separating or pushing up through the fabric.

Step 4
Buy polyester batting if you want something stronger and more stable. It will hold its shape better and is thick but light. Because it's synthetic, it may cause one to feel overheated. Polyester batting washes well and resists mold and mildew.

Step 5
Purchase a batting made of a poly-cotton blend if you want the best features of both fibers. A poly-cotton batting has adequate thickness and warmth without too much weight. It's easy to quilt.
