If you're tired of seeing the same wooden or plastic planters every time the weather turns warm and you want something a little different that your friends and family will love, your best option might be to make your own cast iron planter. You choose the shape, size and dimensions and decorate it in any way you like.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Cast iron piece
  • Drill
  • Carbide drill bit
  • Charger or plate (optional)
  • Non-toxic paint
  • Water sealant
  • Soil
  • Plant
Step1
Pick a few cast iron pieces that you like by shopping at thrift stores, flea markets, antique stores and even digging through your own cabinets. It's best to choose larger or taller pieces because cast iron pans or shallow bowls can be difficult to grow plants in.
Step2
Drill a small hole in the bottom of the cast iron piece using a handheld drill and a carbide tipped drill bit. This is the only thing strong enough to drill through the metal, but you need the hole for the water to drain out.
Step3
Decide if you want a charger or small plate to fit under the planter. The charger will hold any excess water, but it's not necessary. If you want one, find a large glass plate or shallow bowl that matches the color and design of your cast iron.
Step4
Paint the outside of the metal using a non-toxic paint for use on metal surfaces from your local craft store. Some people may prefer to leave the original patina shining through.
Step5
Coat the inside and outside of the cast iron with a water sealant to protect against any possible water damage. The sealant is necessary if you want your piece to last beyond one season because after a few months of regular rain, the piece may become rusted.
Step6
Find a location in your yard for the planter and move it there before you put the soil and plant inside it. Once the planter is full, it might be too heavy for you to move, especially if you pick an urn or a larger sized piece.
Step7
Fill the planter with your soil and the plant that you want and add a little water. Your cast iron planter should now be ready to sit for the rest of the season.
