Most women start to see a few strands of gray hair in their late 30s and early 40s. For all over color, it's usually best to consult a professional hair stylist. But you can often take care of those pesky gray roots at home. Experiment with several different ways to camouflage gray hair. It's simple and inexpensive to do it yourself.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Paint your gray roots with hair mascara. These touch-up wands are a quick and easy way to disguise gray hair. You can find hair mascara at professional beauty supply shops and online. They're usually less than $20 and last for months. These touch-ups wash out with each shampoo, but only take seconds to reapply.

  2. Step 2

Check your pharmacy or superstore for hair color products designed just for roots. They're smaller and less expensive than most hair dye. Although the box will advise against it, many women use just half the product and save the rest for the next time. If you do this, measure carefully.

  3. Step 3

Apply brown eye shadow. Simply spray your roots and then rub some brown shadow on the offending grays.

  4. Step 4

Use a home highlighting kit. But be sure to leave it on for the suggested amount of time. If you wash the dye out too early, your grays may turn red. You should consider a kit that has highlights and lowlights. The more shades you have in your hair, the easier it will be to hide gray strands.

  5. Step 5

Choose a layered hair cut. It looks more youthful and helps to camouflage those gray roots.
