How to Become a Jiu Jitsu Instructor
Jiu Jitsu is an intense, sometimes brutal martial art that focuses on close to mid-close range techniques. Becoming a Jiu Jitsu instructor takes more than extensive Jiu Jitsu training. It also requires focus, determination, dedication to the art and a high degree of personal and emotional maturity.

1
Learn Jiu Jitsu. The first step to becoming a Jiu Jitsu instructor is pursuing Jiu Jitsu training at every opportunity. If you don't have the time to learn, you won't have the time to teach.
-
2
Pay close attention to what your instructor does. Note what works and what doesn't. Watch other students in the process of learning how to teach and not the same thing--what works and what doesn't.
-
-
3
Practice teaching at every opportunity. Don't be afraid to try new ways of communicating with your students, and don't be afraid to change tactics if something isn't working.
-
4
Maintain your own Jiu Jitsu training. Once a student, always a student, and the day you stop learning you will have stopped teaching, too.
-
5
Hang out your shingle once you and your instructor feel that you're ready. Stay in close touch with your teacher and remember to ask for help when you need it.

Tips & Warnings
Consider teaching for your instructor, at least for a while, instead of going out on your own. You'll have a ready supply of new students as well as easy access to feedback and advice from your own teacher.
Starting a new school takes a lot of patience and hard work. It's best to have another source of income and/or be prepared to spend long hours waiting for students. Advertise as much as you like. It's the word of mouth from happy, returning students that will make you a successful instructor.
