How to Follow Someone on Empty Streets

Following someone on a busy street where there are lots of people to hide among is relatively easy. You can dart in and out of the crowd without being noticed and keep up pretty close to your subject. When the street is empty, however, that is a whole different game. You need to bring forth all your stealth and invisible power to follow someone on empty streets.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Step1
Find out who lives and works and travels in the area where you will be following your suspect. You want to make yourself as inconspicuous as possible.
Step2
Dress the part. If it is an urban area with lots of shops and offices, you may want to wear a suit and topcoat. If you are in a suburban neighborhood, wear shorts and an iPod. If you will be going into a rough neighborhood, wear baggie pants, a ball cap and a big jacket.
Step3
Remain close to buildings so that you easily blend in with the environment or duck into doorways if you believe you've been spotted. If the street is long and fairly open, then you can stay quite far behind, as much as a block, without losing the subject.
Step4
Wear soft-soled shoes. Footfalls are the first thing a person will tune into on an empty street, especially if the person is feeling guilty about something or doing something illegal. Make sure you feet don't squeak. Practice walking very softly before you begin your surveillance.
Step5
Check out the neighborhood in which you will be navigating. Know where all the benches are and the places that will be open for you to duck into. Map out in your head where there might be phone booths or other places to which you could turn for cover.
Step6
Prepare a cover story if the person you are following catches you. Be ready with a story about coincidences, or have an excuse to be in the area.
