It's a privilege to get your driver's license. The age you can get your driver's license depends on the laws of the state where you live. While it's not hard to get your driver's license, it does take driving skill and knowledge of the rules of the road.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Pick up a driver's license manual at the local driver's license bureau office. Read the rules of the road for your state to help you prepare to take the learner's test.

  2. Step 2

Gather the appropriate documents you need to identify yourself. Check with your state's requirements, but you almost always need a birth certificate as well as other identification.

  3. Step 3

Take the written or learner's test at the driver's license test station. You must pass the written test before you can take the driving portion of the test no matter what your age.

  4. Step 4

Get behind the wheel and practice driving a car if you've never had a driver's license before. Depending on the state, you may have to wait a number of months in order to take the driving portion of the test. You need to have a licensed driver in the front seat beside you at all times.

  5. Step 5

Do the driving test. The test includes a vehicle safety inspection as well as driving in traffic. You should demonstrate that you can start, stop, make proper turns, signal properly, parallel park and other driving tasks in order to pass the driving portion of the test.

  6. Step 6

Pass the eye test. If you need glasses or contacts, wear them while you take the test. If you think you may need glasses, go for an exam before you take the eye test.

  7. Step 7

Pay the license fee. Get your picture taken for your driver's license. Drive safely with your brand new driver's license.

Tips & Warnings
  • Consider taking a driver's education course. While not all schools offer driver's education, see if your school does. If not you might consider learning to drive with a professional teacher by your side.
