Step 1
Build the muscles you need to shoot free throws, such as your trapezius and arm muscles. Do weight training that specifically targets those muscles.
-
Step 2
Spend time every day shooting free throws. Find a spot on the free throw line that works for you. Learn to consistently drop the ball into the hoop from that spot. Shoot enough free throws from your favored spot that the movement involved becomes second nature to you.
-
Step 3
Help your body learn the right movements by shooting free throws with your eyes closed. This helps you focus more on the muscles involved in the free throw shooting process.
-
Step 4
Get a routine to get your mind set to shoot. If you need to dribble the ball, count a specific number. You may not need to dribble. Do whatever it takes to get your focus on hitting the free throw.
-
Step 5
Know how far you jump back when you shoot. If you tend to jump forward, don't put your toes close to the line. You don't want to lose your free throw because you step over the line.
-
Step 6
Shoot two free throws and then step away from the line. This simulates game conditions.
-
Step 7
Learn to tune out crowd noise. Focus on shooting the free throw and hitting the basket. Don't worry what anyone else is doing.
