A butterfly kick is a move used in martial arts, most often in modern wushu in Chinese martial arts. There are some variations on the kick, but before you can learn them, you need to learn the basic butterfly kick. Though basic, this version takes much practice to master.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Decide which way you want to go and stand facing that direction. Turn around 180 degrees and face the opposite direction toward the wall behind you.

  2. Step 2

Stand with your right leg in front of you in a basic low bow stance.

  3. Step 3

Move forward with momentum as you bring your left right foot up a step without moving your left leg. This puts your body facing to the right of you.

  4. Step 4

Drop back into the low bow stance by dropping your left leg behind your body. Bend your knees at the same time as your chest and head drops below your waist so your body is in the shape of a U.

  5. Step 5

Switch your weight to your left foot bringing you to 180 degrees from your original stance. Throw your right leg upward behind you in a circle as you push off on the left leg and then bring your head up and arch your back.

  6. Step 6

Kick your left foot upward behind you as you right foot comes backward and your arms are extended. This is the tricky part and you have to do it with momentum and power without fear of falling.

  7. Step 7

Bring your left leg back around, following the right leg twisting your body in a circle and land on both feet after the kick (right than left). Bring your torso around back to its original position.
